Ashton next to join Villa?
According to report in the Mirror, Martin O’ Neill is about to raise his bid to bring West Ham’s Dean Ashton to Villa Park.
Although the Villa boss has already spent over £40 million on eight new players this summer, the latest recruit being James Milner from Newcastle United, he is reportedly willing to splash out more than £12 million more to land the England international striker.
O’Neill has already had a bid of £12 million rejected by West Ham. However, in a bid to lower their wage bill, having already let go of Bobby Zamora, John Pantsil, Anton Ferdinand and Freddie Ljungberg, the Hammers might be tempted to loosen their grip on the 24-year old with the improved bid.
Ashton has indicated that he would only want to leave Upton Park if one of the Big Four came calling, but with West Ham’s financial problems and Villa’s potentially playing in the UEFA Cup this season the striker may well reconsider his stance.

Hull bid for Campbell
Hull City made a seven million pounds (8.6 million) offer from Manchester United attacker Fraize Campbell and signed in the Republic of Ireland defender Paul McShane on a season-long loan from Sunderland on Saturday.
Campbell has helped Phil Brown's side promotion to win the championship last season during an impressive loan spell and Tigers chairman Paul Duff wants to bring back the KC Stadium.
Duff admitted the operation May through United if Dimitar Berbatov sign Tottenham.
"We have set a seven million pound offer on the table Manchester United," said Duff Radio Humberside.
"The complexity of their situation is that it depends on them to get one, one that could well be Bulgarian (Berbatov).
"As I have said throughout the summer, we must be respectful of that and there's nothing I can do to force the situation.
"If they do come in with someone I want to be at the front of the queue and I'll do whatever it takes to get (Campbell) in club football."

Mcshane joined Sunderland.
McShane joined the Black Cats from West Bromwich Albion in July 2007 and has played 21 times for the club last season, but fell into disgrace with Roy Keane this season.
The 22-year-old centre-back will be unable to play against Sunderland Hull for the duration of the loan.
