Businessmen deny Newcastle links

Three businessmen in South Africa related to a possible £ 300m takeover of Newcastle have denied any interest.

Billionaire Johann Rupert told BBC Radio 5 Live that he had "absolutely no interest or knowledge" of a takeover has never met any of the persons concerned.
Brian Joffe and Vivian Imerman also refused to join the consortium.

Jonathan Cleland, anonymous spokesman for the consortium, 80% said it was confident of sealing an agreement and had spoken to Kevin Keegan on the return.

Billionaire Rupert said to be the richest man in South Africa, said: "I have never met Mr. Cleland, never talked to him on the phone and my secretary does not have a record he asked.

"I have not spoken to any of the other parties either. I do not know Mr. Cleland, I have a preference for cricket and rugby. I know nothing about football and I am not a man Football. "

Imerman, a former owner of Del Monte Group canned food which has since purchased Scottish whiskey producer Whyte and Mackay issued a statement to make its position.

A spokesman said: "Vivian Imerman can re-confirm that he had no involvement whatsoever with any proposed purchase of Newcastle United, or any other football club."

Joffe, founder of the investment holding company Bidvest, joined them in rejecting the noise.

Interim boss Joe Kinnear revealed Thursday that as many eight consortia have been in talks with owner Mike Ashley on the purchase of Magpie. The South African group was considered the front runners - with their interest in the former manager Keegan making them popular with fans.

Cleland, who declined to comment on Rupert's comments, earlier confirmed he had met Keegan in Manchester on Monday but admitted there is still much negotiating to do.

"It is our preferred option, but we can not make any concrete decisions on the managerial position until the negotiations on our recovery is expected later," he said.

Cleland and his partners say they have lodged a bid for the club with Seymour Pierce Investment bankers, who were appointed by Ashley to sell it.

They and other interested parties were invited to sign a confidentiality clause.

Keegan May will be offered a 5% interest in the club in order to persuade him to return for a third spell at the helm.

Bullard must wait for Fulham deal

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson says he will not offer Cottagers midfielder Jimmy Bullard a new contract, despite his recent call-up of the England team.

Bullard, 29, has two years left on his current deal and Hodgson said: "He does not need a new contract.

"If I was in the final year of his contract and refused to sign, then alarm bells should start ringing.

"If other teams come knocking maybe a different situation will arise, but we are going to do with where it goes."

West Ham, Blackburn and Everton are among the clubs reported to be interested in Bullard, who joined Fulham from Wigan for £ 2.5 million in May 2006.

Bullard more than a year on the sidelines with a cruciata Dislocated kneecap and extensive ligament damage, sustained in September 2007.

But he returned in January 2008 and helped Fulham in the Premier League, for more impressive displays at the start of this campaign earned him a call-up for England's World Cup Qualifiers in September.

And Hodgson believes Bullard should concentrate on maintaining that form rather than to worry about his future.

"He knows that the most important for him to play well enough to place in the England set-up and play well enough to help his beloved Fulham climbing the table," Hodgson explained.

"He knows what he agreed to do so, he is focused on, we are pleased that we have him and we got him for at least the next two years. We will have to worry about the new contract situation as the time to eat."

Premier League week 6 - who’s hot and who’s not?

Hot team

The sixth place in the league, eleven points and six games to 2-1 at the Emirates. They have as many points as Derby County managed to get in all of last season. Hull City fans must think they are dreaming.

It will still be a long hard season for the Tigers, but they were absolutely wonderful beginning. Good luck to them. They are well organized, they try to play decent football and have a great team spirit.

No hot team

I tend to really cross when I hear fans complain that players are not trying. "It's ridiculous" I think, "of course the players are given."

After the game against Portsmouth Tottenham yesterday two ex-pro 's, David Platt and Dion Dublin, both said they believed that most of the Tottenham players were less than 100%. If this is true, it is shameful. Tottenham fans should be the weapons. Incompetence can not be tolerated if the players are all of them, but the incompetence and lack of effort is simply not acceptable.

Hot guard

I have ten goals in two matches and many people (including myself) have begun to write him off. David James had next to nothing to do for four and eighty-nine minutes against Tottenham Aaron Lennon then fired a low, hard shot into the bottom left corner of his goal. James has full length and tipped the ball around the post.

It was a great save by a goalkeeper who had been a spectator until then. This is a sign of a great goalkeeper.

No hot goaltender

I love him as a goalkeeper, but Fulham's Mark Schwarzer will not look back Saturday from the 2-1 defeat at West Ham with a personal pleasure. West Ham is the first goal when I spill the ball into the path of Carlton Cole and the second goal, which proved to be the winner, was a terrible misjudgment by him. He came at the expense of its goal, but never looked like reaching the ball before West Ham Matthew Etherington.

Hot defend

He is an unsung hero of West Brom, and I truly believe that Fabio Capello could do worse than take a look at Paul Robinson. The difficult struggle against the left back has matured and is now less of a risk disciplinary action. May I do not have the pace that it expects a full return to own position but its meaning, its fight against its distribution and, above all, his heart and passion are exceptional.

It is twenty-nine years now it is hardly one for the future, but I've never had full international recognition and only represented his country to levels under 21 years old, many years ago.

I began the campaign. Robinson for England!

Not to defend hot

I still believe that Newcastle Steven Taylor has the ability to be a better player for many years, but it seems to have been affected by the mess behind the scenes at the club more than others.

At its best, Steven Taylor is a leading defense. For now, it seems nervous and hesitant. It is not surprising that some of the Newcastle players are affected by the terrible situation at the club and I hope that people like Taylor, who is a great hope, are not too deeply damaged by the current's going on .

Hot Midfielder

How long can Fabio Capello to ignore the claims of Aston Villa player left Ashley Young? September delivery of pieces is probably as good as anyone else in the country. He runs with the ball at defenders at pace and with real threat. It is direct, fast and skilful.

Another campaign to come. Young for England!

No hot Midfielder

In the past, I was critical of the Tottenham Jermaine Jenas and questioned his right to a place in the England team. I have a little quietened recently as I Breeding and appears to have been one of the few players to Tottenham to play with any spark or enthusiasm.

Yesterday in Portsmouth, I am not well and I gave a penalty for a handball quite ridiculous. Obviously, Tottenham Jenas's woes are not the fault, but he did play a major role in the defeat of yesterday.

Hot Striker

It is difficult to ignore the claims of two but Fernando Torres as he produced two brilliant finishes Thursday in a high profile. However, I will not give this award to him. I give the prize to a player who gave one of the best screens forward-center play I saw in a very long time. Wigan striker Amr Zaki has been absolutely phenomenal in their 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

I played with energy and passion that is rare to see. He also demonstrated an enormous amount of capacity and off the ball and gave Micah Richards and Richard Dunne including a tour absolutely afternoon.

Striker not hot

There is no doubt that Arsenal Emmanuel Adebayor is an exceptional player. It has all the attributes, it is possible for an attacker to have. However, his inability to score in the defeat at home to Hull was absolutely shocking. He was convicted of trying to "walk the ball into the net, and help to create the perfect goal, not only by breaking the net in the way it is more than capable of doing.

If Arsenal are to make a serious challenge for the title they need Adebayor to be his most direct and most unleashed. It was a long way since Saturday.

Windass to fight for Hull place

Hull City's Wembley play-off hero Dean Windass has air talks with manager Phil Brown.

The 39-year striker has yet to start a Premier League game this season, but stay and fight for his place.

Tigers chairman Paul says Duff BBC Radio Humberside: "I was hoping that the Dean to find a way to be happy and play a role in club football.

"He wants to play football until I can walk and I think it's great - I do not rule out Dean."

Windass scored the winning goal at Wembley in May that Clinch top-flight football for the Tigers for the first time last week, but the forward has expressed his frustration at not playing and Duff said he fully understands these concerns.
"I do not think I have to keep training at 100% and I think he has much to offer on the ground and I think he knows that," said Duff. "I think that is one of the things Phil reinforced when they spoke.

"Dean Windass presence around the training ground, travel around the team, his experience and motivation is absolutely huge, and I do not mean that Dean will play a role in this campaign.

Cahill fails in red card appeal

Everton Midfielder Tim Cahill has lost his appeal for wrongful dismissal on the red card he was shown in Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Liverpool.

Ramos stays calm over job future
Spurs boss Juande Ramos insists his job is not under threat after the club's worst start to a season for 53 years.

But following his side the 2-0 defeat by Portsmouth, which left just two points from six games, Ramos admitted he faces an uncertain future.

When asked if he had the confidence of his employers, Ramos said: "Absolutely, we speak regularly and everyone is aware of our situation.

"But if I survive is for the president and board of directors to decide."

Ramos added: "I am not hurt (by the fans' abuse). What evil is not to win matches. "

Some Spurs fans were unhappy with Ramos when he replaced for Russian Roman Pavlyuchenko striker Darren Bent after 73 minutes.

The move kept the visitors with only one attacker recognized on the field despite having to chase after The Game 2-0, but Ramos has defended his decision.

"We played with two strikers in most games but we used one against Newcastle (2-1 in the Carling Cup victory), and it worked better," he said.

"Bent has played every minute of the previous six games and needs a break."

The pressure on Ramos is certain to increase if his side are eliminated from the Uefa Cup by Wisla Krakow on Thursday.

Spurs take a 2.1 lead but Poland to a 1-0 defeat would be enough to see them fall at the first hurdle.

"The players know we have another competition in another on Thursday and we must recover from this very quickly," said Ramos.

Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol has led to the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup in 2007 while Ramos, whose team of Seville for the Spurs represented at the occasion, have guided the 16-round season last.

Against Portsmouth on Sunday, the Spurs went behind to a penalty from Jermain Defoe after Jermaine Jenas handball.

Defoe, who Ramos deemed surplus to requirements, admitted he had been waiting for The Game ever since leaving White Hart Lane in January.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp said he was pleased to have been able to Defoe to Fratton Park.

"Tottenham have a top class manager, who felt he did not need him," said Redknapp. "I was very happy because we need him."

The visitors were denied a spot-kick when a cross Lassana Diarra struck the arm before former Tottenham trainee for Peter Crouch headed in the second Pompey.

"We are in a complicated situation and nobody seems to help us when we need it," said Ramos.

"Portsmouth was a penalty today, but in the same type of incident we were denied a penalty - the same as last week against Wigan.

"In critical moments, we do not get these decisions."

Gerrard wants repeat performance

Steven Gerrard has warned his Liverpool team-mates not to get carried away by their strong early season.

They are second in the Premier League after beating Everton 2-0, their best start in 12 years, but Gerrard is keeping his feet on the ground.

Wednesday Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven is next and he said: "It is important to be humble and not get carried away by the performance."

"But we September with the standard (at Everton), we need to match week to week."

A Fernando Torres double proved the difference against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday and Gerrard was delighted to see him return to his best.

Gerrard admitted he was identified with the Spanish impressive quickfire double, as the derby was to give him sleepless nights.

"You can not keep Strikers with his talent for long because they do not go long without a goal.

"It's only a matter of time. It was a little frustrated the first half, but then [Robbie] Keane put one on a plate for him and the second is typical Torres.

"As a kid games are the hardest to prepare. NERVES The beginning of the week before and you can not wait for The Game to come, so the fear of losing these games takes a lot of energy in advance. "

Gerrard remains short of his 100th goal for Liverpool but he is confident he will come soon and is more concerned with how the team is doing.

"We've been winning games stumbling at the start of the season, but I think the derby performance has set the standard now.

"We have a big game on Wednesday and then another important game against Manchester City, (and) if we can continue at this level then we will certainly be there or just come the end of the season."
