"Gianfranco was our first choice," a senior club source told the BBC Sport.

"We were very comfortable with the three options that we had - Zola, Donadoni and Collins - but Gianfranco came out on top."

And Chelsea and England captain John Terry Zola suggested would one day go to the Blues manager.

"I am sure that one day I'll be back to Chelsea to work with us," said Terry, speaking in Zagreb ahead of England's World Cup qualifying against Croatia.

"He's got a little 'more after the experience of management in Italy-21 side in such a way that would be great for him to get more experience at West Ham and, hopefully, one day Chelsea manager."

The Hammers have moved quickly to take an impressive manager from Curbishley resigned last Wednesday.

Fossero been eager to interview Croatia coach Slaven Bilic, but granted the former West Ham defender because he wanted his country to continue coaching part-time until the end of 'years.

City can´t be serious about Ronaldo bid, says Gill

Manchester United managing director David Gill said he would treat suggestions that Manchester City could table a 135 million pound bid for Cristiano Ronaldo with a pinch of salt ".

Ronaldo heads to the new English Premier League season always closely followed by Real Madrid, which has not tried, but during the summer to ensure the Portuguese international's signature.

But now cross the city rivals Manchester City have entered the fray.

Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the billionaire businessman at the centre of the club taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group, said he wants to build a "dream team" that can compete in the Champions League in next three years.

And he added that they might be willing to make a world record bid of 135 million pounds (210 million dollars) for the star.

Gill, speaking to BBC Radio Five Live show on Sunday, admitted that any club enthusiastic about the idea of making such an offer important for a player.

But while highlighting the fact that United manager Alex Ferguson has been the subject of complaints to the Premier League during its quest for new signing Dimitar Berbatov, Gill said he needed to convince about the 'authenticity of the city ambitions.

"It was an interesting comment, I think this is a fan's-type comment," said Gill.

"It is interesting when Alex [Ferguson] mentioned the signing Dimitar Berbatov in advance that the complaints were made to the Premier League.

"He (al-Fahim) mentioned (Fernando) Torres and (Cesc) Fabregas in the same article, so I think we'll deal with a pinch of salt.

"I've never met the man. It is a fantastic amount of money and would turn the industry's so I can not believe he is serious these kinds of levels.

"Ultimately we will discuss any offer with Alex and landlords, that this kind of money is very important for a person. But we are not in the market to sell our best players."

Gill also insisted the club remained "entirely within the rules" during their pursuit of Berbatov.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has called for a change in transfer rules, and first complained of the Premier League, the United approach for the player.

Gill, however, rejected allegations that United has nothing to reproach.

He added: "We're very comfortable with how it went. There were allegations made, we are comfortable that we approached the way it was quite correct and the rules. "

Gill also confirmed that they would be looking to finalize a permanent agreement for Argentina striker Carlos Tevez.

He said: "A few other cases, we will do is finalize the transaction Carlos Tevez, then the composition of the team will be first class."

Donadoni, Zola on four-man Hammers shortlist

Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Donadoni seem frontrunners to take over from Alan Curbishley as West Ham manager, but the club has insisted Sunday there were no favourites as they have confirmed a four-man shortlist.

Former Italy international Zola and former Italy coach Donadoni has already impressed in talks with Hammers manager Mike Lee, but it has not yet ruled on Slaven Bilic or Michael Laudrup.

Bilic, the Croatia coach, has yet to have direct negotiations with the club while former Danish international Michael Laudrup, the coach of Spanish side Getafe in 2007-2008, will be questioned Monday.

Lee said that West Ham would not wait for January Bilic, but it did not exclude him remain as Croatia coach on a part-time for the October matches.

Lee told BBC Radio Five Live: "There are no favourites for the moment, we have established a good selection process.

"We were surprised and delighted by the number of requests that we had and we are moving towards a short list, and ideally have a manager in place in time for the match West Brom next week.
"Slaven Bilic could potentially be on this list, but it depends heavily on its availability. If, for whatever reason, it was not available until January in terms of working with us, I am afraid that rule him.

"We have a very strong and there will be a difficult decision with some exciting candidates.

"In the meetings held so far, the two who really shined were Donadoni and Zola."
West Ham are resigned to expect that Croatia after the match against England on Wednesday before they can talk to Bilic, but would like a chance to talk beforehand and have been in discussions with its representatives.
The fact Zola and the Italians are Donadoni could increase their chances given that West Ham director of football is a compatriot Gianluca Nani, and that it would be much happier with the continental style that working relationship was Alan Curbishley.

West Ham's selection process has already excluded Gérard Houllier and former Scotland midfielder John Collins and former Ajax boss Martin Olsen.

England win but the boos ring out again

England resumed their expected three points against Andorra last night. It was not quite England and the fans, as has become the norm, boo the side of the field at half-time with the score standing at 0-0. It is far from being a good performance by England, but the work has been done and we must all move forward.

Andorra knew they had no chance to win the game and never really tried. They sat with all their players behind the ball and made things as hard for England to break them as they could perhaps. The fact that England had no idea on how to subdivide was disappointing, but ultimately, they got the job.

This is not the performance on the ground that upset me the England yesterday, it was the undercurrent of negativity coming players in the camp. From a group, Let's face it, more pay, more pampered, over hyped, but lucky and talented young men, it is very sad to hear all about their lack of confidence.

Before the game last night, England captain John Terry actually said that England players were under-performing because of this lack of confidence.

He said: "There is a fear of failure, honestly speaking. It was like for the last two years. I do not think we will be able to go there and completely change overnight. At club level, boys feel free and can express themselves. "

He continued by saying: "When you go out with your country and look around the dressing room and see players you are going to play, it must be the best thing. The trust must be there. It should be the best thing, but the only minute things are not right. As captain, I take great pride when the team play and when the fans boo us off the pitch it really hurts deep inside. As the game went to against Andorra last time, the booing got worse and we brought in our reservoirs even more. "

Terry was frustrating attend another match against Andorra last night and expressed the hope that fans will show more patience with them.

"We need them behind us, whether 30 or 40 minutes at 0-0 - they need to stick with us. We will learn from last time. In preparation of Lately, the question was whether we win 4-0 or 5-0, if it would be six or seven We all expect to win, but we also know it will be difficult. They go out and try to make it again very physical for us, that we have an early May but hit back a little and force them out because they literally play with 10 men behind the ball. "

As it turned out that Terry's prediction on the game was precise enough and the fans do turn on the players. He asked for patience, but why should we expect?

The fans who travel to support the team across the world spend a fortune to do so and are entitled to expect to see some passion, pride and some decent football. The players are paid more for a game that most fans are all year round. Fans have the right to express their views if they feel they are not getting value for money. Players must be very careful not to suggest otherwise.

What is it with the lack of confidence? It seems to be the message in a systematic manner by Trotter England players in their interviews. After the match last night, the two goal hero Joe Cole said: "They had 10 men behind the ball and it is a sticky pitch. He was our first qualifying and our confidence was low."

Thus, players have met and decided that they must stop the fans come? Perhaps they think that fans think they had better not express an opinion on the players because they feel a little weak right now. Maybe the players think they could be fans to believe it is their fault that the team are not doing so well!

However, they try hard, I do not think the players have too many fans to feel sorry for them!

Another thing that disturbed me was the fact that Fabio Capello felt the need to say that he wanted his players to be proud to play for their country.

He spoke after Jamie Carragher, not bitter at his lack of opportunities with England, of course, said he had always difficult when more on the losing side with Liverpool than he did with England.

Capello said: "I remember my country and I have succeeded in other countries, like Spain, too, that all players like to play with their national team. My message is, if you do not have the heart for the national team to stay at home. " The players have the heart for the national team. The players have to sacrifice something to be proud to be here. It is very important. They should be proud to be here. We are now in competitive matches and now we have to play hard, to play for England shirt, and it is very important, but we must also play the result. "

I do not agree with all that said Capello. I think everything is a terrible shame that he believed he needed to say.
