Ferguson unsure over Keane return
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is not certain that Roy Keane will return to football management.

Keane has resigned as manager of Sunderland on Thursday after 27 months in charge of the Black Cats and The Game in his future remains uncertain.

"It is difficult to say whether he will return," said Ferguson.

"It is an extremely controversial. Every week I always had something to say about The Game. It was the same as a player."

Ferguson, who played under Keane at Manchester United, added: "It is an interesting and made a decent up there."

Keane, who has spent more than £ 70m on 33 players since 2006, has guided the club in the Premier League during his first season as manager before last term maintenance.

And despite recent results, which saw Sunderland win one of their last seven games, the Black Cats are always in a better position this year than they were at the same stage of last season.

Former teammate and now Manchester City boss Mark Hughes believes that the release of Keane in May came as a result of not taking a decent pause before finishing his playing career and take over as manager of a club.

37 years, the Irish went to Sunderland in August 2006, almost immediately after the accident ended his playing career at Celtic in June of that year.

Hughes also started his management career, but he believes he was immediately helped by the fact that his primary role was the boss of Wales, with the intermittent nature of the international calendar giving time away of The Game.

"You sense in recent weeks, that perhaps there was a point where I was going to consider his future and on foot," said Hughes.

"He is still young and still has a future in The Game, if he wants to return there are a lot of time for him to do so.

"Maybe I went from being a player to a manager too quickly.

"I think it is important to have some respite eleven you stop playing and even if I went into management he was with Wales if I had a little free time. I do not think Roy has this advantage.

"He needs to step back, learn from the experience and go again."

However, Ferguson believes that the problem is more deeply rooted than that, with the pressures of management to take greater than ever toll.

"There are very few managers that will last more than three to four years in a club nowadays and the life of a manager of a club is becoming shorter and shorter," he said.

"They can go to different challenges, but it is a very precarious industry today and very emotional game.

"A few years ago, people said I should have spent four years earlier - the black flags were out!

"The football people like me are fortunate to have been in a club for so long, though. I do not have to go through this emotional situation."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expressed his surprise at the resignation of Keane, but he believes he will return to management.

"This is a surprise, but I can understand," said Wenger. "He is a passionate man, and I regret leaving the job.

"When you are passionate, especially at the beginning of this career, you physically suffer enormously. Moreover, because he is a passionate man, there is no other way for him to be in work .

"When you are passionate about The Game, you leave it and go because there is no other way to be happy. I think I will be back."

Keane another former teammates Paul Ince has urged managers to give young people more time while also supporting him to return to The Game.

Ince itself is under pressure at Blackburn where his side made a poor start to the season.

"It will be back. It is a fantastic manager, but we lost today," said Ince.

"I've said before, managers need time, just look at Sir Alex Ferguson.

"You can not take Säckingen young managers and put them under pressure. We need to be supported."

Gary Pallister is another of Keane of the former teammates who, like Hughes believes that the Irish need a break from the sport.

"I think Mark Hughes has done a very good point that he never had a rest from football," Pallister told BBC Sport.

"I finished playing and went directly into management, I think I will enjoy a rest with his wife and children and to recharge its batteries.

"It is very difficult to guess Roy, it is entirely his own man and he could decide he is not comfortable being a manager, but it could decide that it lacks."

Pallister added: "Can I find something else to occupy his mind or will I miss football a lot I want to return it?

"I'm not even sure he knows well - he needs a break to focus clearly on what to do."

Pallister also admits that it would not be surprised if Keane left football for good.

"Honestly, I think it needs time to walk away and look at the whole picture," said Pallister.

"He has a big family back in Manchester and I will look at his options and see if he wants to return to the Madhouse that Fergie (Sir Alex Ferguson) called.

"It is very different type of character and is pure box office, he speaks of his heart and he is very blunt in its assessment of things.

"It would be a worse world without Footballing him because he is one of the characters that make you sit and take note."

Southgate tips Alves to come good
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said Misfiring striker Afonso Alves to continue working on his game and the goals will follow.

The Brazilian has scored only three times in 15 games for Boro this season and again drew a blank weekend.

"He wants it to happen and we are desperate to happen for him," Southgate told BBC Radio Tees.

"I have to keep practice on the ground, make good habits and things will happen for him."

Alves has failed to catch a winner at home to Newcastle on the weekend, but again failed to hit the net as Boro had to settle for a goalless draw against their north-east rivals.

Southgate said: "It is desperate to do well and he is desperate to score goals, but he continue to do things he did on Saturday."

Boro missed a good chance to get into the first half of the table after taking just one point from home games against Newcastle and Bolton.

They have not won a home game for over a month, but instead they are unbeatable away from the Riverside in four games.

Southgate and believes they have a good chance to pick up some points the gap with trips to the KC Stadium and Craven Cottage, which sandwich a home game against Arsenal.

"We must go on our trip now, but we have shown we can get points," he said.

"We must go to Hull and Fulham, who are just above us and it is a great incentive to go and get some points.

"We have the pace to hurt teams not to hold any fear for us."

Injured Saha set for quick return
Everton hope Louis Saha Hamstring of injury is not as bad as first fear after the French striker had to come off in the 1-0 win over Tottenham.

"Louis Saha has had a muscle spasm in his Hamstring," Everton physio Mick Rathbone told the club website.

"It does not seem too serious. We will assess in the coming days."

Meanwhile striker Yakubu, who will miss the rest of the season after breaking his Achilles tendon during Sunday's win, will be the Tuesday surgery.

Yakubu fell awkwardly in a challenge with Ledley King after 10 minutes, but at first looked as if it would be good to continue.

However, it was quickly replaced and, after being examined by medical personnel in the locker room, manager David Moyes worst fears were confirmed.

With James Vaughan until the new year early after his knee injury in training, Moyes is left with Victor Anichebe his only good striker.

"We had no chance of injury wise," said Moyes. "But I hope that the group will work hard to meet this challenge, particularly Anichebe who, while only young, you have the real quality."

When asked if the injuries that prompted Scot to seek reinforcements in the January transfer window, he added: "It is well documented that we do not have large amounts of cash here and to launch in January certainly was not our ideal plan.

"But the president has always supported me and clearly, we can not go through the rest of the season only if we have a good attacker.

"We'll see where we are and what we can do when it comes to the new year."

FA BARCLAYCARD PREMIERSHIP - Round 13 : Who’s hot and who’s not ??

Hot team
Despite the great victories for Bolton, Everton and Manchester United, there can be only one winner this week. For a team to have taken as much criticism as Arsenal have over recent weeks to recover from a goal to win 2-1 at Chelsea is quite exceptional.

The second half was as good as anything you see in English football. I had a lot to say about their bad points for praise when it is due, it was a wonderful effort.

No hot team
I wrote my article yesterday morning on the trials and tribulations of Roy Keane. What I did not really say in this article is that his team Sunderland were really unfortunate in their 4-1 defeat at home to Bolton.

The goalkeeper considered poor and the defense looked ... Well, the less said the better on defense.

Unless something happens very quickly, Sunderland, despite spending seventy million pounds in the last year, will be many problems. I am sorry for Kenwyne Jones and Djibril Cisse who looks like a decent strike but are totally hungry for service.

Hot Keeper
One hundred and sixty September Fa Barclaycard Premiership appearances dating back to 2004 is a new record for a goalkeeper. Aston Villa Mr. Reliable, Brad Friedel, kept another clean sheet in their 0-0 draw with Fulham.

How Paul Ince, with all due respect to Paul Robinson, must again, I want him to Blackburn.

Friedel did not have too much to do in the game Saturday but, as usual, I did win a couple of smart noise and looked just as good as he always does.

Hot non-custodial
The goalkeeper Scottish international has a history of being ridiculous, but Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has come a long way for the evolution of a series of fine performances for club and country. He returned to the starting line-up on Saturday after the accident and must wish he had taken another week off.

It was at fault for the first goal they give, should have done better with the second goal they grant, could have done better with the third and to be honest, no luck with the fourth. It has not been helped by the defense of catastrophic in front of him, but obviously not guilty of any of the goals I had the feeling that a caretaker Fa Barclaycard Premiership have kept three of them.

Hot defend
I was tempted to give this to the large malignant William Gallas who has not made much of a bad foot for Arsenal in their victory at Chelsea but for me to defend another was head and shoulders above across the world this weekend. Nemanja Vidic is absolutely huge for Manchester United in their victory at Derby City yesterday.

When the city tried to return to The Game and United fell to ten men you remember United goal under great threat? They all defended well, but Vidic has been remarkable.

Hot not defend
It is a difficult call for him this week that some defenders failed to cover themselves with glory. In truth, I think that the award must go to the Sunderland back four but which one?

I suppose it under its own costs by a lack inexplicably the ball a total of Danny Collins to get the vote.

Hot Midfielder
Everton Steven Pienaar has been plagued by an injury season. He looked class in the world last season but was unable to rely on it as long this time.

Yesterday I scored the winner for Everton with an excellent victory at Tottenham. It was deflected goal and it is not big but it is good to see midfielder South African titles.

Not hot midfielder
He showed great touch as I always, but Cristiano Ronaldo is not the player he was last season. It was, in my opinion, incredibly unlucky to get sent yesterday that I do not think his first yellow card was a mistake at all and his second yellow card was bizarre to say the least.

However, it seems to me like a shadow of its former self and someone who plays his football when he does not want to be.

Hot Striker
This must be Robin van Persie. The Dutchman has always had great ability but because of injuries and perhaps a suspect temperament, he never quite fulfilled the promise he showed for so long.

Yesterday, Arsenal needs a hero and they found one to Van Persie. OK, perhaps his first goal was offside and Lampard Let him turn too easily for second, but they were wonderful and two clinical finishes.

Striker not hot
May be the top scorer in the Fa Barclaycard Premiership in May and have made major goals this season, but the Chelsea Nicolas Anelka yesterday showed how his team missed Didier Drogba.

When Chelsea needed to transmit to cause problems for a defense unconfident, it was visible only by its inability to do so.
