Guthrie escapes increased FA ban
The Football Association says midfielder Danny Guthrie Newcastle will not receive additional punishment for breaking the leg of Hull striker Craig Fagan.
Guthrie will now serve a three match ban for being sent off in Saturday's Premier League match at St James' Park.
Fagan left leg was fractured by Guthrie's wild up in stoppage time during the Magpie "2 -1 defeat at home.
However, the FA revealed that he could not take further measures if it levelled a new charge against the player.
A spokesman said: "Each shipment out-door automatic penalties under existing regulations.
"The FA does not have the power to extend the automatic stay.
"The only circumstances in which we could take further measures would be to issue additional charge against a player.
"This happens only in exceptional cases, such as Ben Thatcher, the challenge on Pedro Mendes in 2006."
Thatcher, then at Manchester City, was handed an eight-match ban with another FA suspended for 15 games two years in 2006 after a challenge that left Portsmouth's Mendes concussed and requiring neurological tests.
However, the spokesman FA has also confirmed that an ongoing review of disciplinary procedures could see a sliding scale in place to increase sentences for serious offences.
He said: "We are currently reviewing disciplinary procedures for potential changes for next season and a sliding scale for red-card offences is one of the options under consideration."
Fagan has continued to turn the clock Hull completed the victory in Guthrie, 21, has several false him by the button.
Hull manager Phil Brown urged the FA to take further action against the former Liverpool player, claiming an automatic three-match ban was "insufficient punishment."
Professional footballers Association chief Gordon Taylor said that Guthrie's actions were "not acceptable".
Guthrie has since apologized, insisting he is not a dirty player, but Fagan facing at least six weeks on the sidelines.
Guthrie missed the Premier League clash with West Ham and Blackburn, Tottenham, over Carling Cup visit to St James' Park.
