Southgate tips Alves to come good
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said Misfiring striker Afonso Alves to continue working on his game and the goals will follow.

The Brazilian has scored only three times in 15 games for Boro this season and again drew a blank weekend.

"He wants it to happen and we are desperate to happen for him," Southgate told BBC Radio Tees.

"I have to keep practice on the ground, make good habits and things will happen for him."

Alves has failed to catch a winner at home to Newcastle on the weekend, but again failed to hit the net as Boro had to settle for a goalless draw against their north-east rivals.

Southgate said: "It is desperate to do well and he is desperate to score goals, but he continue to do things he did on Saturday."

Boro missed a good chance to get into the first half of the table after taking just one point from home games against Newcastle and Bolton.

They have not won a home game for over a month, but instead they are unbeatable away from the Riverside in four games.

Southgate and believes they have a good chance to pick up some points the gap with trips to the KC Stadium and Craven Cottage, which sandwich a home game against Arsenal.

"We must go on our trip now, but we have shown we can get points," he said.

"We must go to Hull and Fulham, who are just above us and it is a great incentive to go and get some points.

"We have the pace to hurt teams not to hold any fear for us."
