Injured Essien faces long lay-off

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien was ruled out for "several months" after the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, the club announced.

The 25-year injury suffered during Ghana's World Cup qualification against Libya in Tripoli on Friday.

Essien will undergo surgery once the swelling around his knee has decreased.

England striker Michael Owen over the same injury during the 2006 World Cup and was excluded from the competition action for 10 months.

Essien was regularly for Chelsea since his £ 24m move from Lyon in 2005, scoring 14 goals in 132 appearances.

A Chelsea statement read: "Michael has broken his anterior cruciate ligament and will be an operation as soon as the majority of the swelling has decreased. We hope that this will happen within a week.

"In the meantime, Michael began rehabilitation at the aquatic centre Cobham which will improve the condition of the knee before surgery. A return to full fitness is not expected for several months."

The loss of the combativeness of Ghana for a long period is a big blow to Chelsea, who did not exchange replacement available and will not be able to buy new faces before the transfer window opens again in January.

Essien had landed awkwardly during the qualification against Libya and was immediately transported to hospital for scans, now with the diagnosis confirmed by Chelsea's own medical staff.

Luiz Felipe Scolari aside, who opened their Premier League campaign with two victories and a tie, are next in action away to Manchester City on Saturday before facing Bordeaux in Champions League and champions Manchester United in the League on September 21.
