Barton banned for six matches for assault

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton was banned for six matches Saturday - with another six suspended - and fined 25000 pounds for assault against teammate Ousmane Dabo.

Barton had admitted a charge of violent conduct and received his punishment at a hearing of football in London.

In July, Barton received four-month prison sentence for assault, which took place in May 2007, when he and Dabo were to Manchester City.

Since the attack on Dabo, who now plays for Serie A side Lazio, Barton was jailed for a drink fuel attack on a teenager in his native Liverpool.

He was released from prison in July after serving 74 days of his sentence for violating adolescence.

Kevin Keegan, who resigned as manager of Newcastle on Thursday, sent his support for the player to Friday the hearing by fax, but did not appear in person.
