City boss Mark Hughes said: "Martin will see a couple more specialists.

"But the view is, he has an injury and could be out of action for some time."

Robinho Hughes expects to be fit to face Newcastle on Monday after suffering a dead leg playing for Brazil against Colombia.

But it is not as optimistic about the immediate prospects Petrov, saying: "He has ligament damage and initial scans do not look good."

Petrov has just returned to the City later Hamstring after injury and Hughes added: "Martin has 10 minutes in a game and 20 minutes in another play before going to his country.

"This is a great demand for the players and they are sometimes at risk if they do not have the time needed on the ground in advance."

Robinho is expected to report to the city on Friday, and Hughes said: "We have not heard of their medical service, we are assuming that is good and well.

"We have seen the incident where he had the injury and had to leave. It does not look like a wound, just a shock."
